Triathlon Wetsuits: Questions to Ask

Triathlon Wetsuits: Five Questions to Ask When Fitting Your Next Wetsuit

Triathlon Wetsuits by Orca
Triathlon Wetsuits by Orca

Fitting triathlon wetsuits can be a big task and the marketing hype add to the overwhelming feeling of information overload.  Ask yourself the following 5 questions the next time you are in the market and you will be happy with your purchase for a long time.

  1. Are you a good swimmer?  Are you a club swimmer or collegiate swimmer in your past?  If you are an above average swimmer, you will benefit from the better technology and the higher quality wetsuits.  If you are like me or not a good swimmer, I don’t care how much technology and cool features in a wetsuit, I am not going to go any faster. Just get me in the water and out of the water. The least expensive wetsuit will do.
  2. What is your body shape?  Long arms? Long legs? Shaped like a pear, or a fire hydrant?  Each of these body types will fit better in a particular brand. Make sure you ask the question of what type of model athlete does this brand fit the best.  You will save yourself a lot of frustration with sizing up.
  3. What is the goal of the wetsuit? Fast in the water, able to float better, warmth, etc. If you are just looking to survive the swim, any good quality wetsuit will do.  But for the athletes who want to go faster or more buoyancy, make sure the technology of the wetsuit matches your goal.
  4. What is your budget?  You can spend anywhere from $100 to $800 on a suit.  Make sure you set your budget before you start, or the “cool factor” will take over and you checkbook will be a lot lighter.
  5. Are you looking for the performance fit or good fit?  The general rule of thumb is that the tighter the wetsuit, the better it works.  So if you can stand the tightness you feel with a triathlon wetsuit, the tighter the better.  A great fitting wetsuit might take 20 minutes to put on.  On the other hand, too loose and you will take on water, not good.

In the end, spending the time up front will save your race.  I wish I had a dollar for all the athletes, who have just ran out and purchased the same wetsuit your buddy recommended, and chaffed all over.  They became claustrophobic and can barely breathe during the swim, not a great start to the day.  Remember.. a great fitting wetsuit will make our break your whole day.

Minnesota State Hockey Tournament Weekend

Vendor Awards for Minnesota State Hockey Tournament Trade Show

This weekend is the Super Bowl of high school hockey tournaments.  The Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. The tournament always creates a buzz in the sports community every year.  Today, my son and I went down to the River Centre in St. Paul to the trade show to see what’s happening.

Warrior: Minnesota State Hockey, River Centre St. Paul, MN
Warrior: Minnesota State Hockey, River Centre St. Paul, MN

The main part of the show is always the big boys and what they are doing.  I thought the best of the show was the Warrior booth.  It allowed players to time their shot, but it went one step further. Warrior compared your results to  “Best of the Day” and “All-Time Best” speeds. By far the most interactive and cool for the kids.

Best of the Show Overall goes to Sauce Hockey.  Mike Smith and his boys had a great booth and some edgy apparel.  That was not the best part today. It was the DJ under Biznasty sign.  He pumped out some great music for the whole auditorium.  It made the event come alive.Sauce Hockey at Minnesota State Hockey Tournament

For the coolest new product at the Minnesota state hockey tournament this year goes to COCO5.  It is a sports drink that is all natural. They are attempting to replace the sports drinks with high-fructose corn syrup.  It tasted fantastic and is all natural.  On the endorsement side, they already have 2-3 NHL pro teams using the product.

Total Hockey Minnesota
Total Hockey Minnesota

Best Training Company booth.  Being a trainer, I have a special place in my heart and understanding of the guys.  It is one of the most important products for developing young athletes, but it is not sexy. And sometimes, not the cool thing to discuss.  Total Hockey Minnesota had the best booth.  Lots of helpful staff, great giveaways. Overall great presentation.

The award for the “Love of the Game” goes to Kyle Oen from Vintage Minnesota Hockey.  He sells jerseys, yes.  But their is more to Kyle than just selling stuff.  He has done more work on the history of Minnesota hockey than anybody I know.  He would rather talk about the legends of

Kyle Oen of Vintage Minnesota Hockey

the past than sell jerseys.  But needs to sell jerseys, so he can tell stories.  He is the real deal when it comes to keeping the legends and past heroes alive.

Minnesota Baseball: Advice on how to develop a young player?

Dan Terres from Minnesota SWAT Baseball Club discussed how he approaches the development of a young athlete who would like to take his game to the next level in Minnesota baseball community. One of the major points he made was that practice is about quality, not quantity, and recovery is just as important as working out.  Just reps dont make you great, lots of quality reps make you great.

Minnesota SWAT has become one of the top baseball programs in the state in a relatively short period of time.  Dan Terres, the director of the program, joined us to talk baseball and how to develop young athletes.

Sleep: The Untapped Part of Recovery

Can recovery through sleep increase performance?

Today we broke down recovery as it relates to sleep in society and young athletes. Young athletes are overscheduled, overtrained, and overstimulated in the wrong ways.

Sleep and Recovery By Stephen McCarthy
Host Stephen McCarthy breaks down Sleep Recovery

We talked about the major obstacles to a balanced, healthy society and lifestyle for families and young athletes.  A couple solutions to the sleep debt include:

1. Taking a 30 minute nap daily.

2. Going outside and getting some sunshine daily.

3. Lower your consumption of TV, the phone, and energy drinks.

4.  Sleep over 7-8 hours a night.

5.  Turn out the lights at night

If athletes would follow these few steps, their mood, recovery and performance would increase.

CrossFit: The Value of CrossFit to Athletes

Crossfit: A training tool for athletes?

Coach Joe Cebula of CrossFit Twin Cities joined us to discuss the training modalities used by CrossFit and how they can benefit your development. He spoke about the varied training and high intensity means of CrossFit. The use of exercises from gymnastics, track, weightlifting, and many others are used in one workout to create the high intensity.  The result of the training is a person who is good in many areas, but not great in one particular action.

The end game is make sure you are looking for all around training, not speed specific or power specific.  The workouts will not be specific enough to develop these particular activities.  On the other hand, looking for general athletic training and a mental challenge, CrossFit will match your goals and you will find the workouts to be mentally, as well as, physically challenging.
